It’d be fair to say that Barcelona doesn’t have a heaving craft beer scene. In fact there’s probably more Irish pubs that craft beer joints.

On my last morning I fortuitously found a couple of venues that I’ll talk about in a separate post, but one that had been tipped to me and came up in all the research was Garage Beer Co.

They’ve got three venues in Barcelona, two of which are open to the public. One is a suburb called Poblenou, which is near the Barcelona coast and accessible by the metro. The second, which I visited, they called University and is near the districts of Eixample and El Ravel – both cool parts of Barcelona.

It is a rocking venue and surprisingly big the small entrance. It opens up huge out the back and houses plenty of brewing equipment that has pumped out an insane 664 beers over the journey.

I love their branding and beer menu above their taps. Great artistry and it follows through to their takeaway menu. When you see the lightning bolt on Consell de Cent you know you are in the right place.

The Soup IPA is their flagship beer and the at least 12 taps carry a great breadth of styles including a dark mild. Their IPA game is strong, and they don’t shy away from big ABV’s. When I visited they had a 11.1% vanilla imperial stout called Affogato Tears.

The Spanish don’t mind a strong ABV. The lagers bought from supermarkets are generally over 5%. Maybe the tax system is different. Definitely put Garage Beer Co on your list.
