Your correspondent has spent the last few days on the island of Mallorca celebrating the wedding of #155. It was a fabulous event in the hills of Mallorca about 30 kms from the capital city, Palma de Mallorca.

I had some time to explore Palma, which is truly an amazing city. It is a city rich in history, being ruled by the Romans, Vandals, Byzantines and Moors before finally being taken over by the Spaniards. The old city is a remarkable collection of narrow cobblestone alleys with sites on every turn. I put the phone away and just walked and walked and stumbled across old churches built in the 13th century.

You develop a thirst in the hot Spanish sun, so I was happy to discover that Palma has a couple of breweries. My body clock is not suited to Spain. I am an early riser and on my first morning in Palma I walking around deserted streets. And many establishments don’t open until 5 or 6pm. Fortunately La Velo Brewery opened at 1pm and after climbing to the Castillo de Bellver – I was ready for a drink.

Fabrica de cerveza means brewery in Spanish and La Velo has been prolific since they launched in 2022 brewing at least 110 different beers over the journey. They are not afraid of robust IPAs and their list on the day I visited had an 7.8% and 8% Double IPA.

They are generous with their taps and put other brewers on. They have a good food menu featuring a strong burger game. They also sell lots of stuff in tins like anchovies and sardines. My simple cheese burger was excellent.

The Beer of the Day for mine was a Honey Double IPA called Fiorella. The honey was not cloying but contributed depth to the well-hopped beer. Squintingly™ good. An excellent reward for a morning of castle climbing.
