Drinking by the Piscina

In 1992, Barcelona held the Summer Olympics. Many of the venues were built in the Montjuic region of Barcelona, which was previously famous for the Montjuic Castle. That’s worth visiting to learn about Barcelona’s bloody history. I did the trek (well I got a bus up the mountain but trekked around the site) and enjoyed the history lesson, but the real motivation was a tip I’d received about a sensational place to have a drink.

Salts Terrassa Bar sits at the back of the grandstand of the Piscina Municipal de Montjuic, which was the site of the Diving and Water Polo of the 1992 Olympics. The shots of the diving with the Barcelona skyline as a backdrop were defining images of those games. The pool is still used, but only for three months a year. I tell you that I would have gone in.

There’s a modest collection of Barcelona’s own Moritz beers, and on tap Sangria. They could go the gouge here, but two schooners of Moritz 7 and a bowl of excellent olives ( it is Spain after all) was $22, which for the location is not too bad.

It goes without saying that the view is spectacular. The star of the show is always the Sagrada Familia – Gaudi’s unfinished masterpiece, but the whole sprawl is simply breathtaking. Glad I coppped the tip.
