The Gopher – Hell’s Kitchen in Manly

In the site of the infamous late night dive bar, the Manly Boatshed, an Irish themed bar has opened. The Gopher, named after an Irish gang that allegedly roamed the streets of New York City’s Hell’s Kitchen, opened in May 2026.

The only parts of the new fit out that have any resemblance to the old joint are the vertiginous stairs and the stage. Otherwise there is nothing evokes any memories of the Boatshed. The transformation is stunning.

Leather booths, faux-oak panelling, tiles on the walls and floors, pressed metal ceilings and floor boards are attractively put together. It is all low lighting without being so dark that you can’t see your companion (if you have one).

The bar is the star and The Gopher has gone big on the branding. Glassware, tapheads, bar staff, t-shirts and tiling all bearing a G or Gopher. The tailored tapheads for a modest range of beers are a unique touch. Two taps of Guinness and Great Northern Mid, sit alongside Kilkenny, Peroni, Stone & Wood and a beautiful Theakston Best Bitter. There’s an Insta account I follow that reviews Guinness in Sydney pubs. I wonder how long it’ll take him to visit.

The food menu looks bloody good. Irish spice bags, pies, colcannon croquettes and modest prices. I’ll definitely be back to give some of the food a go.
