Drinking in The Hunter – in praise of the Hunter Beer Co’s ploughmans

Perfect Ploughman’s

This correspondent’s favourite Hunter beer venue is the Hunter Beer Co in Nukulba. You almost always get at least one @Untappd unique (This visit yielded four!), and there always a longneck on special for takeaway. They’ll fill up growlers as well.

A German inspired quartet

An added bonus is one of the best value Ploughman’s lunches I’ve eaten. Great slabs of bitey cheddar, pickled onions, cornichons, chutney and ham make up a very hearty board. $18 is a bargain – particularly given the Hunter’s proven ability to extract dollars out of tourists.

Any time is a good time to visit, but right now they’ve got four OktoberFest inspired beers:

  • The Original Haze Craze (a Hefeweizen)
  • The Alternative (an altbier)
  • Wunderbar Pils
  • Liquid Bacon (a rauchbier)

I am not a fan of the Rauchbier style, but I’ve got to say that the restrained version Hunter Beer Co has created is very, very good. The subtlety is very welcome and does go well with the cheese and ham.

Hunter Beer Co – always a reason to visit.
