Oompa arrived at appointed hour – 7am – astonished to see waves pushing 4 ft as he crested the hill.

Disappointingly Abbidge had slept through the appointed hour and was oblivious to this once in what seemed a hundred year swell event. When I got him on the blower, he was incredulous at my remarks that we had size. To urge him on I had to relay down the line the Visigoth hordes arriving by the second and jumping out of their cars…..the lineup would be filling up. Abbidge tumbled out, and relayed the signal to Gusticus who was grunting in cubicle 2 North Steyne…’get on ya bike!’…

Finally we had a window…a punishing paddle out to the line-up….some great early faces….annoyingly shared with a passive aggressive hippy on a longboard….this fellow would paddle right into our midst, snuggle up, and then launch into anything resembling a body of water moving shoreward…..he was later heard in a yelling match as he attempted this same ploy on some other unsuspecting crew after a nasty drop-in…needless to say he returned to our midst.

Light drizzle falling… warm in & out… pellagics surfacing…the only issue was the dead low confronted at 8.30am….turning early faces into rearing snapping closeouts…an adventurous exit around 9am…and the first time in living memory of having to pack up and get back in the car in an increasing drizzle.
