My first full day of my trip to the US was driving up through the Far North Coast of California. Colloquially, accessing places like the Mendocino Coast and the Redwood Coast is referred to as going behind the Redwood Curtain. This part of California is amazing.

It isn’t just about Redwoods. There are beaches, lighthouses, hiking, national parks, breweries and quaint towns – but it all comes back to the Redwoods, which are easily the tallest trees in the world. The largest comes in at 116m. Australia’s tallest tree comes in at 96m.

Driving through the Redwood forests is a truly awe-inspiring experience. Their size is unfathomable and the denseness of them at times and it can be quite dark even on the sunniest of days.

So given the domination of redwoods in this part of the world, it is no surprise that there is a craft brewery called Redwood Curtain Brewing Co. They have two outlets – an excellent taproom in Eureka and the OG brewery and bar in Arcata – two of the bigger towns on the Redwood Coast.

Everything I tried at both venues was excellent. But for mine the Imperial Holden Ale, which I enjoyed at the OG Brewery and Bar was the standout. As I’m driving beer flights are getting a workout.
