Pirate to BrewDog to Phat to Otherside – a Phine crawl

I had a Friday to kill in Perth after the prolonged agony and ultimate ecstasy of the Socceroos the night before. I mapped out a course that end up at the fourth and last stop in West Leederville.

I’ve visited the Perth branch of Pirate Life on a few occasions. Now that they are brewing there, there’s always a fair chance of at least one or two uniques, and Pirate Life didn’t disappoint. Both uniques were favourite styles of mine – so I was happy. A lightly citrussed Hazy Pale was quickly followed by a nicely malty red ale.

Fortified for the 650m walk to West Perth and BrewDog, I made quick time. Like all BrewDog venues, there’s nothing small or subtle about this place. They have a good number of TVs and unusually for Perth the majority were watching the Rugby. A good crowd was building for an arvo of sport and expensive beer.

I hadn’t been to the next venue – Phat Brew Club, which was 800m away. You can detour through the Watertown Brand Outlet if you feel like a quick shop between drinks. I didn’t feel like that. If I don’t get back to Perth again in 2025, then Phat Brew Club is my WA venue of the year. Cracking spot and cracking beers.

The beers are cleverly named and if there’s an F in the name, prepare to be Phed. Twenty taps serve up an excellent range of beers, a ginger beer, a cider and a guest tap. The spectrum is broad from a lager to a toffee apple sour. After a great tasting paddle I had a large glass of a limited edition Hot Cross Bun dark ale.

Next time, I’ll spend the evening at Phat Brew Club. There’s a great buzz about the place. The food menu looked good, there were plenty of screens and indoor and outdoor seating was available. Had no qualms purchasing a Phat branded pint glass.

My last stop was one that I’d been to before, when it was Nowhereman Brewing. Now part of the Otherside empire, The Otherside of Nowhere is a very nice place for a drink in West Leederville and a 600m walk from Phat Brew Club.

16 beers were on tap and the 8 beers of the core range were complemented by a number of limited releases beers and a hard iced tea. The Harvest Red Ale is a great beer and would be a staple if I was a regular. Otherside have released a series of “Sabbath” Stouts each year since at least 2018 (according to Untappd). Their 2025 Peanut Butter pastry stout is very good.

A fine way to spend a Friday afternoon.
