Wombat Brewery – community drinking in Ulladulla

After the gleaming mega breweries of Perth & Freo it was a nice change of pace to experience the more local, community vibe of a regional brewery. Don’t get me wrong, drinking on the mouth of the Swan River, watching the sun set into the Indian Ocean is a wonderful experience, but so is sipping an IPA amongst the tanks and locals of Ulladulla.

They are bloody friendly at Wombat Brewery which is in an industrial area just to the South of Ulladulla. I was wearing a Thirsty Devil Brewery cap from Albury (a post still to be written). “Gidday – are you from Albury?” from a bloke sipping a schooner under a Wonbat Brewery pop-up tent. At the bar, the cheery bartender – “Are you from Albury – or have you just been there?” Turns out they had been comparing notes with the proprietors of Thirsty Devil during their mutual development phases. Glad to see both brewery operators smiling.

There plenty of space inside and a little backyard area as well seating in the car park. Like many regional breweries, Wombat Brewery is in amongst a light industrial area on the outskirts of town. There’s the usual food truck selling tasty shawarmas and steak sandwiches.

Sensibly, Wombat are running six taps. Tanks are labelled with what is coming up next. Jervis Bay Brewing and Tumut River each have a beer on along with four Wombat varieties. The beers are very, very good. On when I visited was a Blonde, and XPA, a dark ale and an IPA.

Stand-out for mine was the Dark Emu, a classic brown with good roastiness and depth. I loved the muddy appearance. Excellent, if a little exxy merch, and excellent glassware. So much is good about this place and I’m proudly displaying the Wombat brewery sticker on the Kia.
