Two WTF beers, VB Xtra and Better Beer Middy

I’d heard that Carlton had produced a 6% ABV version of Victoria Bitter called VX, so I was keeping an eye out for it. When I found it in a Bellbird Bottlo, two things stood out. Vessel size is 250ml aka a “Twist Top” or a “Throwdown” and they come in a four pack. So the question is why? A traditional VB 375ml stubby (4.9%) is 1.4 standard drinks. The 250ml throwdown is 1.2 standard drinks. Victoria Bitter “Xtra” but less. WTF…

Equally puzzling is the latest member of the Better Beer family – “Middy”. Another discovery at the Bellbird IceBox, “Middy” is a 3% ABV beer, but has none of the features that make the flagship Zero Carb so enormously popular – no carbs, no sugar etc. Why wouldn’t it be a 3% version of Better Beer. It is a mathematically correct can though. A 355ml can is 0.8 of a standard beer. 0.8% * 355ml = 284ml – practically the size of a NSW middy. Still – WTF.
