@KirksWineBar – not just for winos

The bar and kitchen

One of the many wonderful places I discovered in Melbourne was Kirk’s Wine Bar. Not the sort of place that you’d ordinarily find this correspondent, but I copped a tip from Now Tapped that they had a good beer list. The tip from Now Tapped is sort of right. Not much on tap, but a diverse and excellent bottle range.

Croquettes and beer – you can’t go wrong

It is a classy joint without being up itself. Staff are great. If the croquettes are anything to go by, the food is excellent as well. Plenty of outdoor seating if you want to people watch on Hardware Lane or sit inside at circular tables. In my most recent flying visit I was able to try Brewfist‘s La Bassa – a lager with some profile and Kaiju‘s Robohop. This is a beer you need to find. A lovely “Golden IPA”, which I could have settled into all afternoon. More British than American for mine, but a lovely beer.

Robohop – get it.

The waiter gently reprimanded me for trying the Lager after the IPA (didn’t think I’d have time for a second). Nice that he was paying attention! Highly recommended for a post work drink particularly if you’ve got wine drinkers in your party (not often in my case) and another Melbourne laneway gem.
