It is no surprise that Waikiki is full of places to drink. When I mentioned Waikiki to any one they all mentioned Yards Ale House. We gave it ago, but on a Saturday night, it seemed that everyone that was in Waikiki was at Yards. The beer list is extremely extensive (huge!), and the screens plentiful. It’s a fine place but for my one night in Waikiki I wanted something a little less known.
The Waikiki Brewing Company celebrated its first birthday in March. Right now, everything is brewed on site at its Ala Moana Boulevard location. It is a great place to visit both day and night. There’s a couple of big screens as well and the playlist we listened to on Sunday lunchtime was just superb. Some interesting people watching on offer as well.
The beers are fine too. Hawaiian names abound but the usual suspects are there. An amber, a porter, a brown, a blonde, an IPA, a DIPA and a Pale. A real standout for me was an outstanding chili beer called Jalapeño Mouth. Chili beers can be undrinkable, but this hits the mark. The jalapeño chilies used in the boil make their presence felt on the nose and the palate. Definitely one to have over.
The Waikiki Brewing Company is soon to expand its capacity, so hopefully you’ll see it all over Oahu, but if you are in the vicinity – pay them a visit. It’s worth it.
Intrigued by the chilli beer Jalapeño Mouth that went down well. Do they export to NZ?
