Stadtguet – tried at the source

Winterthur, Switzerland is located about 20 minutes by train from Zurich.  It is a sleepy little town that has a population of approx. 100,000 and has quite an interesting banking/insurance history.  The Union Bank of Switzerland was originally founded in Winterthur 1862 which went on to become UBS AG which was also founded in Winterthur in 1998. Winterthur Insurance was Switzerland’s largest insurer until it was acquired by the French AXA Group in 2007.  It is also a well known textile city which had its heyday in the early 1900’s but the industry has largely dispersed into Asia today.  Now onto much more important demographics Winterthur has its own brewery Stadtguet founded in 2002.  The website http://www.stadtguet.ch/default.htm unfortunately is all in Swiss German but the signature ale and one sampled by BoTF was Stadtguet “Blonde”.  To be honest despite sampling this ale in a fantastic little Jazz Bar and ideal surroundings it was a bit of a letdown and not typical of some of the other malty Swiss or German beers BoTF has sampled.  None the less it was a pretty good to spend a Sunday afternoon.
