The last in the trifecta of ales enjoyed by BotF on their way to the Swans triumph last Sunday was a wonderful Golden Ale from Wales. SA Gold is brewed by Brains, who self proclaim they are to Wales what Guinness is to Ireland. It is an oddity, given that our fair state is named after Wales, that I’ve never seen a bottle of Brains in any NSW bottlo before now.
This particular variety of Brains was only introduced recently (2006), but there’s nothing trendy or kitschy about this drop (unlike the 2nd last beer reviewed on this site). This is just simply a great beer. Plenty of bitterness, without being eye-screwingly so – this would be great on tap as well. The Brains empire, which is relatively young (1882) has expanded beyond brewing into pubs and accomodation. A trip to Wales wouldn’t be complete without a deep immersion into the Brains experience. I love the look of their dark beer.
The SA Gold is named for the founder’s initials – Samuel Arthur. The company is still run independently by Samuel Arthur’s descendants, and they would appear to have a sense of humour as their ads indicate. They also sponsor Welsh Soccer and Rugby.
