Oettinger Pils – a big dependable German

A 500ml tinnie of Oettinger Pils is very much like the old German football team, big, solid and dependable. The 2010 version of the German team is probably more exciting than their predecessors, but like the old team still delivers. A six pack of these tinnies will get you well on the way – but not with any spectacular flavour. A golden pilsener without much bitterness – it’s there but it disappears pretty quickly. Well priced and fine for an evening where taste is not a priority. Oettinger Pils is one of 22 different beers brewed by the Oettinger Group, but the only beer that is imported to Oz as far as I know.

The performance by the Socceroos against Germany is rapidly coming into perspective. England and Argentina have both had 4 goals put past them by the Germans. As pointed out on today’s Offsiders show, the Socceroos group was the only one to contain two eventual quarter finalists, and except for an outrageous act of cheating would have contained two semi-finalists. All this goes to prove that the Socceroo’s performance was credible (they beat the only team to beat Germany) and that by being in the toughest group – were better than England at this World Cup.

PS: the unusual drink container contained in the photo was purchased by my neighbour and Bob Hawke is now in my Cantina.
