BotF Bar of the Month – March

Slim pickings this month, as again BotF correspondents have been working far harder than is tolerable. There was a flurry of bar visits early in the month, but then nada until last night. The 5 bars whose schooners were emptied in March the BotF Bar Review Map are an eclectic bunch.

Once you survive the signing in rigmarole, the NSW Sports Club is fine for a cheap beer surrounded by a seriously good sports memorabilia collection. The Capital Grill is famed for the $17 buck shout, but is probably one of the more poorly located bars in town. The Bavarian Bier Cafe in York Street is in a much better locale and would be bar of the month if someone else was footing the bill. The Fast Ferry bar will never replace the real thing – too quick and too loud.

The winner of Bar of the Month for March is the most unusual of the five. The Space is a piano bar that sits above a beautician-cum-spa in a Manly back lane. Great for a pre-prandial libation. Not the place for BotFers to continue robust ferry discussion on a Friday night, but we’d probably be refused entrance which is quite easy for the Space to do. You can’t just walk in. You have to press a buzzer – the barman has a quick look at you using the security camera – and then opens the door. I’ll be back with Mrs BotF.

We’ll try and do better in April – and we’ve emptied our first schooner for the month already at Bar Luca. We are also trying to RSS feed the map updates to Facebook.
