Another trip down the South Coast of NSW and another opportunity to knock off another brewery or two on the burgeoning South Coast Ale Trail. South Yeast Brewing Co. is a six minutes drive from the Pacific Highway at North Nowra and is well worth the brief detour.

South Yeast Brewing Co was established in 2020 and is the least pretentious craft brewery that I’ve been to. The beer names are scrawled in texta on the side of the fridge that contains the kegs. Logos for the beers are either hand drawn in texta or printed on a piece of paper that then stuck on the fridge.

There’s no canning line but there were a couple of squealers available for filling one of which I purchased. Over the journey, South Yeast has produced 22 beers (according to Untappd). They’ve had quite the range in that 22, and the owner told me that an Oat Cream IPA was in the works.

On the day I visited there was a strawberry sour, a Belgian gold and a mid hazy. My paddle had a couple of pales, a NEIPA and a red ale. No prize for guessing which beer I chose to fill up my squealer. All four beers I tried were lovely, but the red ale had that warming maltiness that makes red ale an all time favourite style.

South Yeast opens at 2pm on Thursdays through to Sundays. The brewer is a friendly guy and there’s a very laid back vibe amongst the punters who were starting to trickle in for knock-off beers. Looking forward to another visit. Need to fill up the squealer.
