Husky Brewery – worth the detour

The South Coast of NSW is a craft beer Mecca. There are twenty-seven breweries between Wollongong and Pambula. The drive down the south coast has also improved substantially with the Albion Rail and Berry by-pass making the journey so much better.

But then you hit Nowra. I’m not sure if there are plans to by-pass Nowra but after freewheeling it from the ‘Gong, you really hit the brakes through endless roundabouts and traffic lights along the Princes Highway. Back in the HopDog Brew Works provided a stop along the way, before it closed in 2018 (sadly, it was one of our favourites). Now there are two breweries in Nowra. South Yeast and Husky Brewery.

I was on a tight schedule, so I could only choose one. Husky Brewery is not too far off the beaten track and it is easy to get back on the Princes Highway. Husky is set in a typical industrial site and they’ve created a lovely space. Two very serious pizza ovens are outside with some outdoor seating. I was there for opening and sampled a paddle. Nice crowd was building on a Friday lunchtime.

Looks they started in 2021 and they’ve punched out 35 uniques in that time. There’s ten taps on the go and to appeal to the broadest market there’s a cider, ginger beer and a seltzer alongside an eclectic beer range. I went a pale, a Festbier, a red ale and an English Dark. All very good. I’m a sucker for a red ale, and the O.B. Red (Old Bastard?) was a classic of the style. The Winchester Witch was also memorable – silky smooth.

Give ‘em a visit the next time you are heading south.
