The Shamrock Irish Bar – Kota Kinabalu

I’m having a short trip to Malaysia. Four nights in Kota Kinabalu – capital of Sabah province, two nights in Kuching – capital of Sarawak province and two nights in Kuala Lumpur. I like to go for a wander when I get to a city. Visit the tourist office, get some local intel and get my bearings. After visiting Jessleton Pier to suss out ferry hopping between a couple of islands tomorrow, I went for a walk along the waterfront. Looks the business, but at lunchtime it is deserted.

Of course 1) there’s an Irish Pub in Kota Kinabalu and 2) it is the only place open. After 15 hours of travel from Sydney Airport and 2 hours of wandering the Kota Kinabalu streets, I deserved a beer. To be honest a Guinness or Kilkenny doesn’t really appeal. They travel as well as Brentford FC. An Edelweiss wheat beer hits the spot and it is an @Untappd unique. I don’t expect many of those this trip.

Of the menus features classics like Irish Stew, Beef Guinness Pie and the decor is Irish Kitsch. Well, off to find a Laksa. And the views over to the islands aren’t bad.
