Maybe the last photo of Sound Brewing Co…

Spending some free time in Perth after a couple of days working for the man. Doing some beach and brewery hopping before seeing the great Dave Warner and the Suburbs perform in Freo tonight. No plan – just find a brewery near a beach and work my way North to Fremantle. Sound Brewing came up on Google, and using Perth’s impressive public transport system I found myself there reasonably quickly.

The Rockingham Centre is a large shopping and entertainment precinct. The Sporting Globe has a big site there and whilst I don’t know if it is part of a franchise – X-Golf is a crazy big indoor golf themed bar and centre. There’s an amusement parlour called i-Play, but I guess that they don’t describe themselves as that! Opposite a large faux-English pub called the Pipers Inn is the impressive frontage of Sound Brewing.

The inside is also impressively large and there was a large bank of taps. You bewdy – this’ll be good. Except the beer list didn’t include a single Sound Brewing beer. The barmaid, who was clad in a Sound Brewing shirt, wearily explained that Cheeky Monkey has bought Sound Brewing and will be rebranding the whole joint from next week. Unfortunately Sound Brewing went into VA after less than two years, but the ambitious Cheeky Monkey Brewery has bought the venue to add to their two Margaret River venues.

Cheeky Monkey makes an impressive range of beers with the whole gamut from IPAs to IPLs. The Amber Ale for mine was the standout. The citizens of Rockingham have no shortage of places to get a beer in their entertainment precinct. And for the beach – Rockingham Beach offers good views of the Kwinana industrial facilities.
