When I lived in the insular peninsula in the late 80s I owned a few 70s cars which necessitated a number of visits to the numerous wreckers in the back streets of Brookvale. Fast forward 35 years and now breweries and distilleries proliferate in similar numbers to the wreckers that are long gone (though there are still plenty of mechanics around).

Back of the Ferry loves a good trivia night and a new one has sprung up at The Good Bar, which is the Brookvale home of Goodradigbee Distillers – and until Saturday (Broken Bay Brewing) the newest venue in Brookvale. The distillery’s name comes from a river in the Snowies where the founder used to fish. It is easy to say – it is phonetic – but The Good Bar is even easier to pronounce.

Obviously the gins and cocktails are the star of the bar but it is great to see The Good Bar offering four beers. Freshwater Brewing, Bucketty’s, Dad & Dave and 7th day are represented. I absolutely love 7th Day’s Mango Hazy IPA and sat on that all night whilst my daughters sampled a gin or two. There’s great camaraderie developing between a number of the venues in the #BrookvaleArtsDistrict and that is evidenced by BrookieFest which is being held over 3 days – February 9 to 11. “7 venues, 3 Days. Food, Events. Music”. And of course great drinks. What a fabulous initiative.

The Good Bar has an inner-west op-shop furniture kind-of vibe (that’s not a bad thing, by the way) and the menu looks pretty good. I’ve had the meatballs and tinned olives (separately!) and both were very good. There’s something for everyone drinks wise at The Good Bar. And the trivia’s good fun (Wednesday night). And the Mango Hazy IPA didn’t hinder the team.
