My first time in Germany since 1989. Better weather and more money to spend – good times. First brewery was the historic Zu Den 12 Apostles. Two house brewed beers in a delightful rustic setting. A hell and a dunkel or in Tooheys speak, a New and an Old.

All the takeaway joints sell beer. Binding is a Frankfurt brewery and their Export went well with a late night snack of Currywurst. Currywurst was invented in Berlin and is a sliced up sausage in tomato sauce and curry powder. Unusual, but it works.

On the delightfully named Mendelssohn Staße, in the Westend district, you’ll find the Camba Taphouse Frankfurt. Plenty of outdoor seating and very friendly and helpful staff. 20 taps of eclectic beer from Germany and countries like Estonia. The tasting paddles are the go.

Whilst the Lollihop IPA from the Czechia brewery – Sibeeria – was a ripper, Beer of the Day came from a cracking little place called Braustil. Nestled under a brutalist architecture styled building is a wonderful little microbraueri – bottelshop – biergarten. Because of noise restrictions the punters were all crammed inside and I propped up on the bar.

The Tutti Frutti New England IPA tasted so much better than it sounds. A cracking looking beer with awesome haze and a squintingly™ good NEIPA. If I get back to Frankfurt, I’ll be visiting again. One place I won’t be visiting again is Kakadu’s – an Australian sports bar that doesn’t show Australian sport. Thanks to young Alex we were able to watch one of the great prelim finals on his iPhone.

Fortunately, Brewdog’s Frankfurt branch was not faraway. Plenty of decent beer to try there.

It was wonderful walking weather and I crossed the Main river a couple of times on old bridges. On my way back I stumbled across an open air food market, which fortuitously included two beer trucks from Phinyo Beer (outside Frankfurt) and Bier Hannes (a brewpub in the northeast of Frankfurt).

A cracking start to the trip. The beer is great and the prices are sensational. Off to Nuremberg next.

Nice summary of beer tasting in Frankfurt! 🙂 Naïv is also an awesome place to try out…
