Today is a bloody sad day. One of Back of the Ferry’s favourite brewers has been closed by its capitalist overlord – and the world is a poorer place for it.
In September 2021, the Fermentum Group was bought out by Lion Australia. That news rocked the craft brewing world, as a number of breweries that were seemingly sacrosanct in the eyes of craft beer drinkers went to the dark side. Unfortunately for one of those breweries – Two Birds, the dark side has become completely black. On 21 July – that’s it for Two Birds – Lion are shutting it down for good.
In the early days of Australia’s longest running and most sporadic beer blog, we latched onto Two Birds. Danni and Jayne never forgot and when we crossed paths it was like old mates catching up. The photo above was of a chance meeting at Harts. The Two Birds were having a settler before an awards function (they won). They were more than happy to interrupt their contemplative moment to have a chat. The Two Birds aren’t just great beer people, they are just simply great people.
I’m gutted for them and all their staff and colleagues. I’ve never sat down a ranked my top 10 beers of all time. Here and now – I’m putting on the record that Two Birds Sunset Ale is a Hall of Fame beer.
Danielle and Jayne – thanks for the beers and the memories. Lion – simply go and get f$&ked.
