The Widow Maker, Cyril Dickthorpe’s Sky Bar and Cascade Green

It was a packed day for BotF with a number of BotF related experiences enjoyed. Lunch was partaken with another BotF member at the Combined Services RSL. We chose the fine dining room on the first floor as opposed to the no less fine but less salubrious bain marie bistro on the minus one floor. BotF can strongly rcommend the Surf and Turf, but for a laugh – you’ve got to check out the signature dish on Page 4 photographed to the left. When BotF can find an excuse not to return to work a la Tony from Toowoomba’s recent post – I’ll be giving the Widow Maker a go.

After lunch, a high powered discussion on boundary breaking, envelope pushing and horizon breaching mobile transacting was held at the Sky bar. Our host was one of our regular commenters – Cyril Dickthorpe. As you can imagine, a supporter of BotF with a fridge full of beer is a host with admirable largesse. BotF and BotF were able to enjoy some wonderful lagers overlooking Sydney and the Inner-Western Suburbs from the SKy Bar, which is on the top floor of an advertising agency that shall remain nameless. Some more idea creation sessions will need to be had – thanks Cyril.

The beer this BotF correspondent enjoyed was Cascade Green. Now, BotF has coined the phrase “Beer label hyperbole” and I hink Cascade Green is guilty of it. There is an earnestness about the Green movement, which you want to admire, but which you feel awkward about liking because it is just so earnest. The beer itself is not particularly memorable and the promised citrus tastes weren’t immediately apparent – but maybe this reviewer’s palette was slightly jaded.

The beer’s website claims that “the net impact of the greenhouse gas emissions for Cascade Green is reduced to zero”. That’s admirable and if it is the same price as the other tasteless low carb beers, then I’d buy it in preference to Hahn SuperDry or Pure Blonde. I’ll give it another go to see if it is a rung above the Blondes of this world, but I sense the rung might be quite smal.
