It really doesn’t matter how well a pub is adorned, decorated and appointed – what is important is whether cold beer is served, the service is good and the price is right. The Willows in Broke is an unusual pub as it shares a back room with the Broke General Store. We were greatly amused by the trolley out the front with an unusual strain of oranges.
But all snobbery aside, this is a fine place for a beer. I’ve avoided the wineries this trip despite Cyril’s recommendations and have stuck religiously to the amber drop. $18 for 4 ice-cold schooners of Tooheys served with a lashing of dry wit makes the Willows a decent venue for a couple of pre-dinner prandials.
The decor is sparse but intriguing. We were fascinated by a frame of weird and wonderful beer coasters, a bottle of Duvel and some artwork, which had to be seen to be believed. The Willows is what we want in a bar – a hop server in a forest of grapes. Don’t be put off by the lack of pretention.
