The October long weekend is as good as long weekends get, but is extra special because it signals the commencement of Daylight Savings. There is rarely a poor time to have a beer on BotF, but the spring and summer bevvies are undoubtedly the best. Beer porn is also significantly better on the iPhone in daylight.
This long weekend was also different because we got 3 GFs on the one weekend. Unfortunately the Shute Shield clashed with the AFL replay and didn’t get much of a look in, but that’s not surprising given how bad a state rugby is in right now. Peter “Fab” Fenton sums it up well in this article. The BotF tipsters got it right on the majority votes – with 3 from 3. Of all fans, I felt sorriest for the Saints who really should have won the week before, after surprising the Magpies. The replay was always going to be one way. St.George not surprisingly blitzed their decider and they would be favourites to make the GF next year.
BotF watched the pre-game NRL GF entertainment with a new beer from Gage Roads Brewery. Gage Roads brewery was founded in 2005 in WA, by a couple of blokes that were brewing beer at the Fremantle Sail & Anchor. Gage Roads Brewery is now listed and Woolworths has a 25% stake, and it is in Woolworths owned bottlos that you can find Gage Road brews, including the very attractively packaged Wahoo Premium Ale. Gage Premium Lager is advertised as a “Batch Brewed and Extra Smooth”. It certainly is smooth and goes down very easily. It isn’t particularly robust, but is pleasant and has no nasty after taste. Fine for summer drinking.
