The Amberoom – aptly named

The Amberoom is the public bar of the Royce Hotel on St. Kilda Rd. Melbourne. The Royce is a boutique hotel that was once a Rolls Royce showroom. The bar is not large but, given its location a little ways out of the CBD, is suprisingly packed even mid week. It has a great range of beers both on tap and bottled, including Fat Yak on tap.

The clientele at the Amberoom are hard to pick. Probably mostly corporates on overnighters but, interestingly, the St. Kilda Rd Police Centre is across the road. This place has TV crews parked permanently outside and I can remember as a kid watching the news and always seeing rows of VIC police holdens out the front and some overweight moustachiod detective in an appalling suit being interviewed. Times have changed and Underbelly has lead us all to believe that detectives all wear Gucci and Armani. Maybe I was surrounded by Victoria’s finest as I punched out a few Fat Yak’s last week…….
