Woolies + Microbrewery doesn’t add up

BotF spotted Dry Dock Premium Lager just before Christmas, but has only just been able to lay its hands on a sample today.  Simply put, the wait was not worth it.  I remember the Sail & Anchor being one of the finest pubs in which I’ve ever stepped foot.  Based in Freemantle, the Sail & Anchor has produced beers in house for many years including the iconic Brass Monkey Stout.  Somehow, Woolworths has become involved and is not satisfied with the duopilisation of bottle shops in Australia – it is now trying to get into the brewing game.

Woolworths has partnered with a brewer in WA to produce beers under a “private label”.  Dry Dock isn’t brewed at the Sail & Anchor pub – so it is difficult to understand why they’d allow their name to be connected with this insipid beer.  Apparently Woolies is a part owner in the company that owns the Sail & Anchor – but that doesn’t mean you have to trash the brand.  This is a beer for drinking after you’ve played a game of cricket in 40 degree heat – it is very plain and in0ffensive.  The label screams generic lager, and that is exactly what you get.

Yet another 330ml bottle – at least it’s 5%.
