Bucketty’s Brewing Co – open in Brookvale via Bucketty

Craft brewers are often persistent buggers. You have to be when you deal with councils. Bucketty’s Brewing Co are more persistent than most and if you read their back story on their website you’ll understand why. A four year journey from the fields of Bucketty (a locality in the Cessnock LGA) has culminated in a packed opening day in Brookvale.

The original dream was to run a brewery off-grid on a hop farm in Bucketty. As an owner of a weekender not far from Bucketty I am a little sad Cessnock Council “crushed that dream”. As a resident of the insular peninsula, I am delighted that they’ve found a location in a more cooperative LGA – being Brookvale. 4 Pines Truck Bar, Nomads, 7th Day, Dad & Dave’s and now Bucketty’s Brewing Co. All within walking distance of each other. Throw in the craft beer supporting Chubb’s Bar & Q – Brookvale is second only to Marrickville as a craft beer mecca in Sydney.

A solid social media campaign (and COVID19 restrictions) meant that the “House Full” sign went up early on the first day. Punters were flocking in and by 2pm that was it. We took no chances and were sipping our first beer at 1.07pm (opening at 1pm) and got a great spot on the window. The fit-out is fantastic. Maybe there’s some pieces of Bucketty in Brookvale. Beautiful hand-made timber tables and benches are a feature a really big and well appointed space. When it is less crowded I look forward to sitting at the wood and corrugated bar complete with coat and bag hooks.

Under the watchful of Roger (he’s the bearded bloke in the doorway), we worked our way through Bucketty’s first offerings. A lager, a bitter and a hazy pale. The standout for mine and Deano was the Aussie Hazy Pale. Very punchy and tasted much bigger than its ABV would indicate. The drivers loved their half of bitter – good to have a tasty mid-strength in the list. The glassware is magnificent and the tap heads evoke the forests of Bucketty.

There’s a food truck out the back with burgers, skewer, wings and things on offer. Pool table and an arcade machine – this place has everything. Go well – Bucketty Brewing Co – we’ll be back.
